May is Speech and Hearing Month

Every year, Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) works to raise public awareness for people with diminished communication health.

The organization hopes that dedicating a month to this cause will highlight the importance of having your hearing checked regularly and that early detection and intervention is the best way to treat communication disorders. They also seek to raise awareness for how their members help people live a better life. At Soundwave Hearing Care, we offer hearing assessments and solutions to everyone in the Calgary area. Keep reading to find out more about how you can take control of your communication health and how it can make a difference in your life.

Avoid loud noises
This might seem like a pretty obvious step to take to avoid hearing loss, but many people don’t realize that any sound over 85 decibels will actively cause damage to your hearing. Seems like a lot, right? Well actually, 85 decibels is about equivalent to hearing heavy traffic while you’re on the highway. Here’s a short list of sounds to which prolonged exposure will undoubtedly cause damage to your hearing:
• Motorcycle engine – 90 decibels
• Full volume music – 110 decibels
• A jet engine – 120 decibels
Surprising right? It’s important to do what you can to mitigate the loud noises in your life so you won’t suffer hearing impairment and need to visit a clinic in Calgary.

Protect your hearing in noisy environments
There are multiple places where it might not seem “cool” to protect your hearing. But simply putting in a pair of earplugs when you attend a concert is a huge advantage when it comes to reducing damage to your ears. It’s also important to stay a safe distance away from the source of the sound and to take a break in a more quiet location from time to time to give your ears a rest.

Have your hearing tested
The easiest way to make sure your ears are in good health is to regularly undergo hearing testing at our clinic in Calgary. A simple test every six months will ensure that your hearing isn’t damaged—and if it is, our trained staff will make sure to take the proper measures so it doesn’t get any worse.
