Smartphone apps can simplify the lives of people with hearing impairments and communication difficulties. Since mask-wearing can make it more difficult to make out what people are saying, some of these may be especially useful during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here are four apps that can help you manage hearing difficulties (all are available on both Android and iOS devices).

1. Chatable

This app uses AI technology based on auditory neuroscience to enhance speech and reduce background noise with the swipe of a volume bar. To use it, you’ll need to place the phone close to the person talking while the person listening wears a set of wired or wireless headphones. Thanks to its adjustable settings, Chatable can be used by people with all levels of hearing loss.

2. Ava

This speech-to-text app offers more than others of its category. Ava uses artificial and human intelligence to transcribe one-on-one and group conversations both in person and online. Its capacity for generating instant captions can be especially useful during video conferences.

3. Temporary Hearing Loss App

Created by musiciansclinic.com, this tool measures temporary changes in a person’s hearing threshold, which is one of the earliest signs of hearing loss. To use this app, the listener needs to measure the quietest sounds that can be heard both before and after exposure to loud music or noise.

If there’s a shift in the listener’s hearing threshold, taking a few days of quiet time can help prevent this temporary problem from leading to permanent hearing loss.

4. Starkey Edge Mask Mode

Edge Mode for masks in Starkey’s newest hearing aids delivers an on-demand boost for speech audibility with just a tap of the hearing aids. The hearing aids also automatically optimize for hearing even with social distancing and background noise.

When to schedule a hearing test?

he increasing availability and variety of apps that can assist with communication and hearing difficulties is truly remarkable. However, it’s important that you get your hearing tested by an audiologist if sounds are muffled or you have trouble making out what people are saying. Any noticeable change to your hearing should prompt you to schedule a hearing test.
