Are you a parent who has a child with hearing loss? While it may be tempting to let your child take a break from their hearing devices on the weekends or during the summer, consistent auditory input is necessary for your child’s development. Here are six reasons why your child needs to wear their hearing aids all the time.

  1. It improves language learning. Hearing aids are vital in improving language learning in children with hearing loss. Children with hearing loss have a smaller listening bubble. They might miss hearing essential words and phrases that help them learn language. If children with hearing loss don’t wear their hearing aids all the time, they might not be able to develop these skills at the same pace as their peers.

  2. It makes it easier to develop speech. Hearing aids make it easier for children with hearing loss to develop their speech. When children with hearing loss don’t wear their hearing aids regularly, they may miss hearing different sounds, making it hard to understand and recognize new words. This can negatively impact their speech and language development.

  3. It helps make critical changes to the brain. Wearing hearing aids helps make significant changes to the brain. For example, if your child has high-pitched hearing loss, the part of their brain that processes high-pitched sounds stops being used. Their brain adapts by using that area to process other sounds. When they start using hearing devices, the high-pitched sounds become audible again. However, if they don’t consistently use the hearing device, their brain won’t be able to make space for those sounds, making the hearing aids sound noisy and echoey.

  4. It’s easier on the child. As a parent, it’s easier to take the decision out of your child’s hands and decide that they wear their hearing aids all the time. This will help your child to get used to their hearing aids faster.

  5. It reinforces the importance of hearing aids. If your child has hearing loss and you’re feeling unsure about how to react to it, it’s essential to know that your child can pick up on your feelings. If you don’t encourage your child to wear their hearing aids, they may feel like there’s something wrong with them. Show your child wearing these devices is a positive thing so they feel good about them.

  6. It helps with social awareness and building friendships. If your child has difficulty hearing, it can be challenging for them to develop and maintain social relationships. That’s why they must wear their hearing aids all the time. By doing so, they can join social activities and form strong connections with other kids.
