New Study Reveals Impact of Hearing Loss on Long-Term Earnings Growth

hearing loss

When it comes to the challenges related to hearing loss, people often think about communicational limitations and how they can affect an individual’s social life. However, hearing loss can also have a significant financial impact on the professional life of young and older adults. This is what a study conducted in Norway and published by the Ear & Hearing journal reveals.

How the Study Was Conducted

The idea of the study was to track the earnings of individuals between 20 and 40 years of age for 20 years so that the financial development of those with normal hearing and those with hearing loss could be compared. Pure tone audiometry was used to identify their hearing threshold levels. Out of 14,825 participants, 230 were identified as having hearing loss at the start of the study.

The Impact Hearing Loss Has on Earnings Growth

The study revealed that there was a significantly lower increase in annual earnings for individuals living with hearing loss, which contrasts with those with normal hearing capabilities that were able to improve their income more substantially over the years. The study also found that the difference can be even more pronounced when comparing adults under the age of 30, suggesting that hearing loss can have an even greater impact on the early development of a person’s career.

Education – A Critical Factor

Education also seems to be a key factor in career development, even for those living with hearing loss. The study showed the difference in the annual earnings increase between those with normal hearing and those with hearing impairments was more pronounced among adults with lower levels of education. This is because those that held more advanced degrees and certificates typically had access to higher-paying jobs that don’t necessarily deal with occupational noise, which poses greater challenges to those living with hearing loss.

Detecting Hearing Loss at an Early Stage

The study conducted in Norway does more than showing the discrepancy in economic growth and career opportunities between those who are living with hearing loss and those with normal hearing. It alerts us of the importance of detecting hearing loss at an early age. This can be done thorough comprehensive hearing tests that can help you detect the condition early and identify where communication breakdown occurs with precision and accuracy. The sooner you have access to treatment or hearing aids, the more likely you are to overcome the professional challenges imposed by hearing loss, which is particularly important in early career development.
